WHAT DO I NEED TO FILE MY TAXES?

The documents you need for tax preparation depend on your individual situation. To help you get ready for your tax appointment, we’ve created this checklist of items you may need to bring.

Please bring all applicable documents listed below.




 

  1. Personal Information:

●      Government-issued Photo ID (Driver’s License, State ID, or Passport)

●      Social Security cards (SSN) or ITIN letters for all individuals on the return

●      Your Spouse’s full name, SSN or ITIN, and date of birth

●      Identity Protection PIN, if one has been issued to you or your spouse.

●      Bank routing and account numbers (for direct deposit of refund or payment of balance due)

 

  1. Dependent(s) Information

●      SSN and dates of birth.

●      Identity Protection PIN (if issued)

●      Income of dependents and of other adults in your household

●      Form 8332, if applicable (custodial parent releasing claim to a child)

 

  1. Sources of Income

●      Employed

●      W-2 Forms from all employers

●      Unemployed

●      Unemployment (1099-G)

●      Self-Employed / Contractor Income

●      1099 NEC / 1099 MISC

●      Schedules K-1 (from partnerships, S-corps, or trusts).

●      Records of income not reported on 1099s

●      Records of all business expenses (or completed expense worksheet) 

●      Home office details (square footage, utilities, rent, etc.) if applicable.

●      Estimated tax payments made (Form 1040-ES)

●      Gig work (DoorDash, Uber, etc.) – income, expense, and mileage reports from the app

●      Rental Income

●      Records of rental income and related expenses

●      Form 1098 (mortgage interest), property tax statements, insurance records

●      Number of days the property was rented or used personally

●      Rental asset information (cost, date placed in service, etc) for depreciation.

●      Other Income

●      Retirement: 1099-R, SSA-1099

●      Savings & Investments: 1099-INT (interest income), 1099-DIV (dividends), 1099-B (stocks), 1099-SA (Health Savings Account), cryptocurrency transactions.

●      1099-K (third-party payment processors like PayPal, Venmo, Square,etc)

●      Real Estate Sales: 1099-S, closing statements (HUD-1 or ALTA)

 

 

 

  1. LLC and S-Corp Business

●      Profit & Loss statement or bookkeeping summary

●      1099-NEC / 1099-K forms

●      Summary of income and expenses (if books are not maintained)

●      Vehicle mileage log

●      Home office expenses (square footage, utilities, rent, etc)

●      Business asset details (vehicles, equipment, property): total cost and date placed in service

 

  1. Deduction & Adjustments

●      Home & Property: Form 1098 (Mortgage Interest), property tax statements

●      Education: 1098-T, records of qualified education expenses (books, fees, supplies), records of any scholarships received, 1098-E (student loan interest)

●      Family: Childcare records (EIN/SSN, name, address, amount paid)

●      Health Insurance: 1095-A, 1095-B, or 1095-C

●      Retirement: IRA or HSA contribution statement (Form 5498), records of early withdrawals or rollovers.

 

  1. Other Important Documents

●      IRS or state correspondence received during the year.

●      Estimated tax payment receipts (federal and state)

●      Any legal documents affecting taxes (divorce, adoption, name change)

 

  1. For New Clients

●      Copy of prior year federal and state tax returns

●      Copy of current driver license or ID for each taxpayer and spouse.

 

 

Tip: Bring everything that might relate to income or deduction. It’s better to have too much than too little!
